Art classes for kids in Prep to Grade 2

An Art Explorers art class is for children from Prep to Grade 2, and offers a fun and active way for students to develop interest and skills in the visual arts.

This class could see us ‘flying’ over the land to get a bird’s eye view, or experimenting with water colours and a variety of papers. It may see us completing detailed sketches, talking about an artist’s work, or making modifications to a clay creature to enable it to run fast.

In this age group students progressively learn techniques while using a variety of tools and media such as graphite, acrylic, water-colour, pencils, papers, stamps and stencils. The class environment is relaxed, encouraging experimentation and learning.

Art Explorers
helps kids develop a love of creating, helping them organise their ideas and manage their time.

The age range for this class is for children attending school (or home school equivalent) in Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 in 2024.

How many children are enrolled in a class?

There are 10 places available to be booked in each time slot. We also reserve two additional spots in each class that may occasionally be booked for a make up lesson for a student from another day. We offer a total of 70 places each term in our Art Explorers age group.

How is the class structured?

The class will begin with a 10 minute observational drawing exercise, before moving on to a variety of different art projects that fit with out weekly theme. We use the full 45 minutes for art activities, children do not do any set up, pack up or wash up in our art classes.

What is included in the cost? Your term fees include a 8 week term, as well as all materials used in class. There are no extra materials purchases required for any of our art classes. You are also entitled to up to three make up lessons per term, for any classes you may miss. Make up classes must be used within your current enrolled term.

My child is only interested in drawing/sketching, is this the right program for them?

Absolutely! Would you believe this is the most common question for our primary / early high school age classes?

At this age students often love to get really good at one thing (much like an instrumental student who just loves to play the same song over and over!). Most often we find this to be drawing, as these are the art resources that the majority of students have easy access to at home or school, and tend to have the most experience with. You may notice the same character / drawing / animal/ landscape repeated across many, many artworks.

While this repetition is fantastic at building both skill and confidence, it sometimes makes it a little bit challenging for students to try out a different type of art making. And this is what makes the art program at Flying Fox Studios so unique! The introduction to a wide variety of media by designing projects that will maintain confidence while at the same time building new abilities. Easy builds confidence, challenging builds skills, and a great program offers a balance of both.

Your child's focus on one particular area will often flourish when they discover the wide world of visual art. As they grow in their knowledge of different types of art media such as inks, charcoal, graphite, paints, pastels and papers their artworks will gain new depth. They will grow, layer upon layer, what they already love with new skills, tips, tricks, and techniques they have gained from our fabulous and experienced teachers.

What age is this class for? Art Explorers is for children attending Prep, Grade 1, Grade 2 in 2024.

A Guide to Enrolment

All classes at Flying Fox Studios are run on an opt-in basis for every new term or unit. All places are offered on a first come, first served basis, each term. Current students need to re-enrol to secure a spot for the following term. Due the popularity of certain age groups, some classes will fill very quickly when a new enrolment period opens.

Our enrolment policy enables students to change class days and times between terms if needs be, new students to join a class, students to move up an age group in between terms, as well as enabling students to take a term off, without losing their place for the year.

We do offer a free trial class, however a free trial booking does not reserve a spot in a class for the term. We recommend students interested in this age group attend a trial class in the term prior to the one they wish to enrol into (i.e come along for a trial lesson in Term 2, with a view to enrolling early when bookings open for Term 3). Free trial classes must be booked through out office. In this age group parents are asked to wait outside the classroom while the lesson is in progress.
